In the tradition of random people posting random recipes to the planets, here’s one for slow cooker lasagna. Quick prep, easy cooking, and really good. Enjoy!

Slow Cooker Lasagna

Preparation Time: 00:30

1 package Lasagna Noodles; uncooked

1 lb Ground Beef; cooked

0.5 lb Italian Sausage; cooked

2 cup cottage cheese

2 cup Mozzarella cheese

0.5 cup water

1 jar Spaghetti Sauce

1. line bottom of slow cooker with lasagna noodles.

2. Mix the spaghetti sauce, ground beef and italian sausage

3. spread half of the sauce on top of the noodles

4. spread half of the cottage Cheese on top of the sauce and meat. This has roughly the same consistency in the end as ricotta cheese, and is used instead.

5. Add the water on top

6. Spread one cup of mozzarella cheese on top.

7. Repeat steps 1-6, creating a second layer of lasagna Noodles. Omit the water.

8. Cook on low heat for 4-6 hours. I usually go a little on the long side, but you should keep an eye on it.

So, I’ve been hacking for about 24 hours straight on getting a nice bit of code written for Fedora-tour using the Clutter UI toolkit, the toolkit used to program the new gnome-shell and some other fancy stuff. Unfortunately, I chose to use the python bindings for clutter, called, sensibly enough, pyclytter. ZOMG, we’ll see if that was a mistake soon.

The first issue, which is strange to me still, and resulted in three posts at fedora-devel, with me answering my own issue, was that my python code was randomly segfaulting (I laugh when I see that) because it makes calls into a compiled, I assume, bridge library between the clutter libraries and the python bindings. OHFUN. So, after trying to get some useful debugging from it for about 18 of those 24 hours (six of the 18 were sleep, admittedly) I rebooted my system for upgrade purposes and lo and behold! my code works! Idk, either. LD fun? who knows, who cares? I’ve raged enough over it for two lifetimes

The second issue was the complete and total lack of pyclutter documentation and example code. PyClutter was packaged in Fedora, I’d assume for one application, the media-center application entertainer, which is broken with the version of PyClutter we ship.[1] Oh dear.

On top of that, there are virtually no working examples of PyClutter on the internet, as far as I can tell. Google Code search lists two, which I’ve stuck here for good posterity:

There is also one hello world example that didn’t work for the version of pyclutter that Fedora 12 ships.

So, I fixed it. This provides a quick crash course of a few different things to do in clutter. You can also, I learned, create a clutter stage embedded in a gtk.Window, which is freaking cool. The code is fairly simple to do it, and it’s what Fedora-tour is doing:

#add the embedded clutter canvas to the gtk window
self.embed = cluttergtk.Embed()
self.mainWindow.add(self.embed)
self.embed.show()

#realize the object and get the Clutter stage.
self.embed.realize()
windowSize = self.mainWindow.get_size()

At which point you have a clutter stage you can do whatever with. Enjoy. Clutter is a really nice toolkit, and the python bindings make code quick and easy. Fedora-tour is going to have some cool dynamic introduction scenes. It’s just too bad there isn’t more easy to use code out there in the wild.

Hey guys, I need some help from a GTK developer more talented and knowledgeable than I. I’m trying to make a nice UI for Fedora-tour’s first page, in which a user is presented a quick tour of some installed software, and fedora in general, à la:

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this is basically impossible without using gtk.Fixed, which, from my interperetation, sucks. I’ve been told by a few people to implement a UIBuilder object and construct it from XML, but I can’t really ‘do’ that because the content is being generated dynamically, and these icons may or may not exist, or may exist in a different order than is set in the XML. The key for Fedora-tour is to make the content editors’ (Docs team, marketing team, possibly SIGs) job as easy as possible, including not making them have to patch a big-old-XML for the entire application’s GUI. An XML UIBuilder simply is not possible in this case.

anyone have any idea on how to handle this?

Today I did some initial hacking on some design documentation of Fedora-tour. To start out, I have a document describing a -draft- of Fedora-tour’s content descriptions and how the filesystem will be laid out. This is currently in my fedorapeople space, so feel free to

I’ve filed an Infrastructure ticket[1] to get Fedora-tour properly hosted with Ankur and I as admins on fedorahosted, so hopefully that will help make development a lot more open, and, well, fun

So, since I really have no official experience in Software Development, much less PROPER software development with design and thought, I thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone had any thoughts and discussion. Ankur’s off having fun at foss.in, so I’ll throw this at him when I see him in IRC.

Basically, we want the project to be easy to maintain and dead easy for content writers (which can range from SIGs, to the Marketing team, to the Docs team) to add content. To do this, I figure we should have an XML descriptor of what each "package" should contain. In this sense, package is not necessarily an RPM, there could easily be more than one package in a single RPM, just what I named each topic in Fedora-tour on a whim and will change. For example, there would be different sections in the tour:

* What is Fedora Linux

* What is the Fedora Project

* What’s new in Fedora 13?

* Get to know Fedora Desktop Edition

* Get to know Fedora Electronics Lab

etc

etc, each with a tree of topics underneath. The XML files should be simple enough to allow the teams to easily write one up without the Fedora-tour maintainers’ intervention. As a sample and a sort of reference XML I created [2].

So to compliment this, the filesystem layout under /usr/share/fedora-tour/ would contain content directories for each Locale, content-enUS content-ptBR, etc and a directory called packages/ containing these XML.

On launch, the widget which creates this menu will create an objective representation of either each package’s XML or the entire tree (one level up from each package) and use that object to render each page’s contents.

What is everyone’s thoughts on this? Do you see any better way to do this than I am proposing?

Also: Free preview of what Ankur and I have in mind The pages underneath each icon would be more traditional HTMl or similar content, but this would be the first form the new user would be exposed to. The tree will probably change, it came from openclipart.

So today was the day I have been blagging, denting, talking, thinking and eating for the last three months, the Arizona Business and Liberty Experience. It was the reason I became a Fedora Ambassador, it’s the reason I got to meet a ton of amazing people, and it’s the reason I got a bunch of cool free stuff

I got there nice and early (Read: Before anyone else showed up, even before TrendyHuerta was awake) and was basically wandering aimlessly for an hour or so before everyone we needed and our set up supplies arrived. But, I learned that our event host, UAT, had dorms on campus, and given the place’s tiny size, situated roughly between a 7/11 and a hotel, that was pretty surprising.

So, set up set up set up, and I have my Fedora table set up, complete with tee shirts, media and temporary tattoos. A major huge awesome thanks to Clint Savage (herlo) for having this stuff for ABLEconf, letting me be his manatee — er, mentoree –, and making sure the goodies made it from UTOSC to ABLEconf. Judging from some of the stuff that TrendyHuerta brought down, they have a heck of a conference after so few years they have been holding the event, and with any luck we will be as successful soon.

We opened up with a cool presentation from Aaron Seigo, who is a KDE core developer and head of the plasma project, and has done a whole bunch of other things that I can’t remember. I was set up to help him demo the remote plasmoids feature of KDE 4.4 in a live show, but unfortunately my Avahi mDNS was misbehaving. The second I told Kevin Kofler about it when i got home, I felt like a complete fool. I had forgotten to disable my firewall blocking mDNS. :< There was also a Konversation developer in attendance of Aaron’s Presentation, so KDE got at least some representation at ABLEconf, and it was cool to meet someone who I may soon be working with on Konvi. Hi Travis Aaron’s presentation will be available on blip.tv semi-soon, along with a few other presentations, for anyone and everyone who is interested.

At this point, I staffed our booth for about an hour, with many people stopping by to check out the Fedora media and swag. We were situated next to the Ubuntu Arizona LoCo table, so we had a nice fun explaining the differences, in tandem, between our two distributions. I started the day with a full box of media, tons of buttons, pens and a few shirts, and at the end of the day about half the media, mostly install DVDs, were gone, and basically all the swag except the buttons had been snapped up by our attendees.

After lunch I attended, for at least a few minutes, a pair of talks by Red Hat’s Rick Spurgeon, one of which was presented by Fedora Project head Paul Frields, entitled The Fedora Project. Unfortuantely I had to leave early to head upstairs to my presentation, conviently enough entitled The Fedora Project. The presentations were, thankfully, not the same — my presentation was given by A. Mani for Software Freedom Day in Calcutta, India. My presentation went off very well, if I must say so, except for my friends harassing me with choqoK twitter notifications Btw, for anyone reading this, in honor of David Huerta (@huertanix on identi.ca and twitter, that’s where you can complain) you just lost the game.[1]

So afterwards, we had our party at Boulders on Broadway, a pretty cool bar and grill type setting, where I got absolutely schooled by Aaron and just about everyone else at pool, even though I was the only sober person there, being too young to drink. I heard a lot of bad jokes, a few good jokes and had some pretty cool jokes, and heard some cool ideas I had never heard of with regards to economics and national policy. All while enjoying some nice pizza and caffiene. As far as I know, those guys made it much later into the night than I did. I was at home asleep about midnight.

Today was supposed to be the FOSS gaming day, however we only had a few guys show up, and none of them had the games installed. Beside that, UAT’s networking setup is awkward to say the least, and it was about noon when we actually got to any gaming, and at about the same time David rolled out of bed after Saturday’ night on the town. At this point, we just sat around, enjoying Hedgewars, World of Padman, Nexuiz and other little fun games, and generally talking about Free Software.

These two days have been really amazing, and the last few months have definitely paid off in full. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend many more events in the future, both as a Fedora ambassador, and as a simple GNU/Linux geek I have begun to make plans to attend Camp KDE in January at UCSD in San Diego, so hopefully I can catch some of you there
